Reflection on Philip: Moving
Within the context of this course there has been a noticeable emphasis on movement; Gilroy's chronotype of the ship in motion, Stiles' description of performance requiring the body and its inherent qualities like movement, race, gender, sexuality. The idea of Carnival as being the conduit for previously enslaved peoples, "controlling what they never controlling before", embodies an even deeper metaphor of movement, the body, and control. Especially when considering the history of Carnival and the increased desire for the established classes to institutionalize it. I think Philip's use of a Creole patois in the discussion of the history of Carnival adds a personable quality to the text and brings the content to life.
